The Mystery of Fast-5 and D.I.E.T.: Bert Herring, MD at TEDxRiversideAvondale

Originally destined for the surgical suite, Bert’s experiences in the Marine Corps changed his outlook on medicine and the realities of global problems. After working at the National Institute of Health with a focus on cancer treatments, Bert found time to study global obesity. The outcome of this research sparked the Fast-5 weight-loss tool, which has helped thousands of people overcome obesity. It’s a way of eating that is consistent with a lifestyle emphasizing simplicity and value—two virtues that are conspicuously absent in America’s booming weight-loss industry.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

To lose weight, "Eat less. Exercise more."
Just make sure you eat less at THREE MEALS A DAY PLUS SNACKS.
This was what I was taught as a newly-minted diabetic just about 11 years ago by my insurance-paid dietician/nutritionist. Yes, she was a nutritionist. Showed me the colored plate and everything. No dairy, so definitely the latest expertise.
    BULLSH*T! Pure, unadulterated bullsh*t!
The only thing that lowers my blood sugar is NOT EATING CARBOHYDRATES, which you MUST EAT to be an American today.

"Breakfast is the most important meal of the day!"
I didn't believe this. But it still haunted me when I didn't eat breakfast. You don't have to believe it for it to influence you. It affected me even as my daily experience told me it was not true. I didn't tell myself it was a LIE. That would have been too harsh. To much reality. Too conspiratorial. But still, my experience was the EXACT opposite.
Fasting is the only way back for me. Back to health. No diet plan that worked for me to lose weight works now. Not even no carb. I have lost as much as 68lbs in 1-1/2 years. But it always comes back. Even when I stay on the diet! Why? Because we aren't meant to eat 16 hours a day! We may not even be "meant" to eat seven days a week! We'll see.
Or should I say, "I'll see"? A scientific study of one. What scientist call, "anecdotal evidence".

What would impress me the most is if this guy is in his mid-70s. Anyone know? Please don't tell me he's only 60 or something. Nor would it make any sense, since he wants to go water-skiing at 100.

Started at 2pd and 4ozs at birth. Dr. said let him eat anything he wants.
I did for 45 to 50 years with no problem till my metabolism changed.
Now, 190 at 5'6 at 63 I constantly drink Coke Zero and eat everything in sight. And I mean…
I eat it like I'm in a speed eating contest and four plates is not uncommon.
Losing the pop, or soda scares me most.
    Any input.
